The view does not matter. You might perhaps check out the sounds section of
Voice Over help. There, you will find many sounds which were not there before.

I have not noticed the sound. Is this only in Classic View? I'm using standard
view, and have not heard any new sounds.

No, you don’t. IF a message has an attaachment, a special sound will play. IN
fact, that sort of leads me to the observation that there are more sounds for
different things in 10.9 than there used to be: however, the sounds are a
little lower in volume than they used to be even without ducking checked.
Check ducking, and you will have to listen for sounds even more closely.

For the person the other day who was having issues receiving attachments in
mail, the answer is to look in the file menu now. No longer are attachments
seen in the body of messages as before: rather, they are now gotten to via the
file menu. This pertains to not only saving attachments, it applies to quick
look for mail attachments also. Now, it seems, you can’t pick and choose which
attachments to save. They just all get dumped in to the download folder. When
you click on the “save attachments…” in the file menu, the standard save dialog
window pops up. You don’t know this however, because Voice Over doesn’t focus
on it. You have to manually look for and choose the window via VO+F2 twice.
Once you are in that save dialog window, All is as you are familuar with.
