I suspected something like this might be possible but didn’t want to try it at
the time I was installing Bootcamp because I had a limited amount of assistance
and needed to get it done quickly. Now I have abandoned Bootcamp and only use
a VM.

You can use the upgrade version. The way to do it, when you first install,
skip the activation step. You will then have an unregistered version of
Windows on your computer. Then, insert your upgrade disk again and run the
setup .exe. This is where you will do the Windows upgrade. You already have
a version of Windows on your machine, and this time you can enter your license
number and all will be fine. MS did this so you could actually install a clean
copy of Windows.

When I was poking around the Windows store all I could find were
upgrades. Either Windows 8.1 from Windows 7 or Windows 8 from any other
version. I think I found in one of the FAQs that if you wanted to run it
in a virtual machine (or on a machine that never had Windows before) you
had to buy the system builder version. I found the 8.1 System Builder
for $97 on Amazon.
