Hi Alex, I've found iCloud Mail web interface accessible, but not particularly user friendly. This isn't an issue, however, as I rarely need to use the web interface. Having said that, gMail's standard view isn't particularly user friendly for reading mail, though it's plane HTML mode is a little simpler.
I use both gMail and iCloud, and haven't noticed any problems with iCloud spam filtering. I get no SPAM to either my gMail or iCloud email addresses. Though I tend to only give out my iCloud address to friends and family, and keep the gMail address for website registration, forums and mailing lists etcetera.
