Hi Brian,

In addition to what John mentioned, you could also use the tab-key to more 
easily move around the site then either press return or VO-space to activate an 
item.  One thing that I've always made sure that I've done is to check the box 
in the Advanced pane of Safari Prefs that tells the Mac to highlight items when 
pressing the tab-key.  The bonus to this action is that pressing Option-tab 
will take you directly to Edit fields.  This seems to make many problematic 
web-sites at least usable.
