Comment:

 Which version of MadWifi are you using now, the old package from 2005-10-
 08 or a more recent snapshot? As p0g0 already pointed out, recent versions
 of MadWifi automatically create a STA VAP on module load, unless told
 otherwise. In that case you have to destroy the autocreated VAP (which
 will be named ''ath0'' in most cases) before you can create a new VAP in
 another mode with that name.

 Another thing: check your kernel messages (via the ''dmesg'' tool, for
 example) and see if you get any warning and/or error messages when you
 load the modules. Check that you actually have a device named ''wifi0''
 (via ''ifconfig -a'').
