Comment (by [EMAIL PROTECTED]):

 The problematic revision is r1407, r1406 loads just fine.

 In r1406 I only get one ath0 interface with r1407 I get ath0 and
 wifi0_ifrename.

 The problem was an entry in /etc/iftab autocreated by ubuntu install:

 {{{
 # This file assigns persistent names to network interfaces. See iftab(5)
 eth0 mac 00:0d:60:11:ac:aa
 ath0 mac 00:02:8a:dd:81:4b
 }}}

 I guess that something in the deep shadows of the udev system tries to
 rename wifi0 (which has the same MAC) to ath0. ath0 already exists, code
 breaks and is terminated by a timeout later.

 I'm going to report a bug to Ubuntu launchpad
