jackd is the "JACK Audio Connection Kit sound server". It's a low-latency
sound server which is
used by other audio-software which connects to this sound server.
(more info here: http://jackaudio.org).
The import thing here is "low-latency", it can be accomplished by a kernel
module called "realtime", which is part of the linux kernel. This
module gives users in a certain group the privilege to run programs in
realtime. jackd is such a program. Now,
whenever something "bad" happens, which hinders jackd to run in realtime,
a so called "xrun" has
happened. I don't know why it is called "xrun", sorry. When these "xrun"s
happen, you notice it
because of some clicks and cracks while playing audio or recording audio.
Especially in the latter
case it's somewhat annoying, because you have to record it all over again.
Hope that clarified somewhat the problem.
