New description:

 Hi all,

 I have been trying to get the wifi in my Sony laptop (VGN-NR120E) to work
 with Ubuntu 7.10 (x86_64)... and I haven't had any luck. It has an
 Atheros AR5006EG PCI Express mini card in it. Here are some details,

 It has a wireless lan on/off switch on the front of it, the switch is on.

 output from lspci,

 {{{
 06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5006EG 802.11
 b/g Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)
 }}}

 I have grabbed/compiled/installed the latest svn code from madwifi,

 {{{
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/madwifi# svn info
 Path: .
 URL: http : // svn.madwifi.org/madwifi/trunk
 Repository Root: http : // svn.madwifi.org
 Repository UUID: 0192ed92-7a03-0410-a25b-9323aeb14dbd
 Revision: 2841

 Last Changed Author: mentor
 Last Changed Rev: 2839
 Last Changed Date: 2007-11-08 10:55:02 -0600 (Thu, 08 Nov 2007)
 }}}

 here is the output from dmesg when I try to modprobe ath_pci,

 {{{
 [  911.880375] ath_hal: 0.9.30.13 (AR5210, AR5211, AR5212, AR5416, RF5111,
 RF5112, RF2413, RF5413, RF2133)
 [  911.896808] wlan: 0.8.4.2 (svn r2839)
 [  911.905710] ath_pci: 0.9.4.5 (svn r2839)
 [  911.905786] ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:06:00.0[A] -> GSI 18 (level, low)
 -> IRQ 18
 [ 911.905817] PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:06:00.0 to 64
 [ 911.910305] MadWifi: unable to attach hardware: 'Hardware didn't
 respond as expected' (HAL status 3)
 [ 911.910362] ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:06:00.0 disabled
 }}}

 Just looking for some advice!

 TIA,
 George.

Comment (by mrenzmann):

 Is the output of lspci what makes you believe that you have a AR5006-based
 card? If so, lspci is not reliable for chipset identification, and you
 might be another victim of what is described in #1192. Please verify and
 give a short feedback here.
