It might be a dumb question, but: are you sure that the WLAN cards you use
in your clients have 11a support?
Can you try [wiki:DevDocs/AthDebug athdebug/80211debug], with athdebug
flags {{{+beacon}}} and 80211debug flags {{{+assoc +scan}}}?
