New description:

 On one laptop, I am using the Backtrack 3 Beta live CD with a Netgear
 WG511T Atheros card and when I run wireshark to promiscuously capture
 traffic from another laptop, I'm only able to see half of the traffic.

 I can see the replies from the router back to the other laptop (e.g.
 HTTP/1.1 200 OK) but I can't see the traffic from the other laptop to the
 router (e.g. GET).

 It seems that I am not the only person having this problem:

  * #1179
  * #322

 P.S. The network that I am trying to sniff from does have WEP enabled.

Comment (by mrenzmann):

 What version of MadWifi do you use?

 Are you sure that the issue is actually caused by a bug in the driver? Are
 the stations you don't hear any traffic from in a range where your client
 could "hear" them? What mode does the VAP work in you use for sniffing; is
 it a monitor VAP?
