You should be able to convert the faxes directly- that's what I'm doing,
only with TIFF faxes instead. The distortion comes from faxes having
different pixel resolutions in the X and Y dimensions. Do an identify on
one and examine the resolution, should provide clues to what you need to do.

Here's a snippet of perl code I use to convert my faxes (as well as many
other types of documents:

$imgfile = Image::Magick->new;
$x = $imgfile->Read("/tmp/$$.$img[1]");
$density = $imgfile->Get('density');
$density =~ /(\d+)x(\d+)/;
$xres = $1; $yres = $2;

$xper = 90/$xres*100;
$yper = 90/$yres*100;

`/usr/local/bin/convert /tmp/$$.$img[1] -filter Box -resize
$xper%x$yper% -colors 16  -append /tmp/$$.gif`;

The trick is to scale differently in the x and y dimensions- this script
resizes it based on the different resolutions, to maintain the original
aspect ratio. Let me know if you have any questions.

And yes, I know I could do the convert through perlMagick too, but I'm a
lazy and busy programmer. That'll be in the next release!
