You may be right, it could be more explicit. 

Anyway, I'm not sure that the documentation is wrong.
in example the second line give : -chop widthxheight{+-}x{+-}y{%}
I understand that if I want to use 'x' and 'y' I need to put '+' or '-' 
before.

In fact I personally prefer to give to convert the maximum of information.
So if a command take a rectangle area, I will give it a rectangle.
