Thanks for that, Anthony.  Unfortunately, no version of Windows
Media Player that I have seems to recognize those command line
arguments.  And the accompanying help files are dreadful.

But you gave me a push in what I think was the right direction, and
I found a program, VirtualDub, that not only did the manipulation I
wanted, but also can save the results in "Old format AVI" that
ImageMagick reads fine.
