But you gave me a push in what I think was the right direction, and I found a program, VirtualDub, that not only did the manipulation I wanted, but also can save the results in "Old format AVI" that ImageMagick reads fine.
VirtualDub actually offers the functionality to extract the frames as JPGs, BMPs and TARGA. For very complex video operations you should also try AVIsynth (together with AVIsynth).
