On the one hand, the '--count' option was added 3+ years ago
(git commit f69c5018 [5]) and even a fossil like Debian Squeeze
has 1.7.2.5 [6], but on the other, we're still shipping a bunch
of compatibility functions for Emacs 22.2 which was released
in March 2008 [7]...
