Hmm, odd. It was added on 2000-06-22 (commit 5b0a4fc7 [1]), meaning it should be present since 21.1 (released 2001-10-28 [2]). How about formalizing a backwards compatibility policy? I'd say we try to ensure compatibility with the versions present in Debian oldstable (currently Git v1.7.2.5 and Emacs v23.2), and any compatibility with previous versions is just a lucky coincidence.
