I have recently installed M on an SGI running Irix 6.5 and am experiencing painfully slow delays when downloading messages from my IMAP server. The latter is located across a couple of gateways elsewhere on our moderately sized university campus, but all connections are Ethernet-speed or faster. When I start up M, all of the message headers are downloaded very quickly, as is the first unread message body, but when I click on subsequent message headers it usually takes about 20 seconds for the message body to be transferred and displayed regardless of how small it is.
I am not using any other IMAP mail readers on this system so it's difficult to make any comparison, but when I use the Solaris dtmail IMAP reader on a Solaris machine on the same subnet as my Irix box, message body downloads are essentially instantaneous. Does anyone know what the problem here might be? The only configurable M option that would seem to have any effect on this is the IMAP message pre-fetch feature (IMAPlookahead), which I have set to 10. This seems to have no effect on my problem, however.
