i'll take it as a task to start researching issues and commence preparation
of a plan for an S/MIME subproject. i'd think the thing to do is join the
mahogany developers list and continue discussions of the subject there.

yes, fitting S/MIME into the MIME framework involved a lot of complication
for the designers, and complication for the implementors follows from that.
