I agree with you, however, if the pulldown list had focus when the box pops
up, u can just use ur arrow keys to go up and down on the list, esc to
cancel and enter to accept. 

Keyboard wise that would be easier than checkboxes (apart from moving ur
hand a bit to the right), although radio buttons would be the easiest way
for the user, and might be the easist one to understand.
