These are IMAP folders, but the type of folder seems not to
matter. I tried creating a local MBOX file with random messages from
my mailbox and the same bug appears. The exact sequence of clicks is
this:

        1) Double-click the folder to open it. It is sorted by date initially.
        2) Click the "Date" tab to sort by date in reverse order. It shows
"sorting" in the status bar and then displays the messages, sorted by
date.
        3) Click the "Date" tab again. Nothing happens.

Whether I can successfully sort once or twice depends on how
the mailbox was sorted when it was initially opened. Another click
sequence is this:

        1) Double-click the folder to open it. It is sorted by subject
initially.
        2) Click the "Date" tab to sort by date. It sorts by date.
        3) Click "Date" tab again. It reverses the sort order.
        4) Click "Date" tab again. Nothing happens.

So, apparently, it is not resorted when the sort order I want is a
sort order that was already used once. That is, I cannot start with an
initial Ascending Date order and get Ascending Date -> Descending
Date -> Ascending Date by clicking the tab twice.

They seem to be exactly the same, looking at them in the
mailbox view.
