Yes, surely it sorts the messages in a thread as one entity right now.
Just which sort-key to use for the thread is the point.
(I just wanted to give a complete description of what I'm thinking about)

BTW: What about sorting by size ? This too should (IHMO) be done for the
biggest/smallest message in thread, depending on sort-order.

It's also for me not a that big issue. So if I should just write a
bug-tracker issue to have it remembered, just drop me a note. (But I will
be on holiday for some time, so your message might reach me too late, to do
it right now...)

P.S.: 
Two notes: 
- A friend of my just confirmed, that the problem with Umlaute in
subject-lines is "really" gone. Works with different mailers in both
directions.
- He then tried to outsmart Mahogany by using UTF-8 - but didn't succeed ;-)
