I've noticed this as well -- it's actually a symptom of a more
general problem. When a message is selected in the message list, my
expectation is that interface focus will shift to the message preview
window, but as it is the focus stays on the message list. The main
annoyance here for me is that I tend to click on a message, then try to
use my mouse scroll wheel to scroll down and read that message text --
but when I scroll the wheel, it doesn't zcroll the email text, it scrolls
the list of messages in the mailbox.

I can see another side of the issue, though: there are probably
people who use their keyboard arrow keys to move down through the
list of messages. In this case, it would be just as annoying to have the
focus constantly shifting to each new message, because then your next
down-arrow keystroke would scroll down in the message text instead of
selecting the next message. So, perhaps this could be a configuration
option ("Switch focus to preview window on message selection")?
