OK, I think my phrasing was misleading, partly because my
understanding was wrong. It does not matter what is in the
username field. There is one unique sequence of characters
(I cannot find another) that is rejected (without warning
or error). This is the sequence that is my SMTP username,
but that seems to be irrelevant. I.e., even if I change
the SMTP username to 'foo' I CAN set the password to 'foo'
or 'bar' but not to my username. I cannot find the
interaction.

Might someone, sometime have pondered forbidding a username
to be used as a password in M?

Anyway, I am not plagued by this as a practical matter,
but it is an odd puzzle.

Thanks,
Alan
