 No, you don't need to recompile, support for it is included by default.
The problems are bad flags handling (e.g. flags like "Important" are simply
not remembered when you close the folder and open it again), poor
perfomance and maybe more. So it's pretty bad for day to day use. But it
could be just fine for export/acthival.

 If you already have a way to create HTML from MBOX this would also work
with MH files. The difference between MBOX and MH is that MBOX folder
contains many messages while in MH the folder is a directory with many
files each of which contains exactly one message.

 This is easy, of course. What is slightly more involved is decoding
MIME-encoded parts. But GNU mailutils might be able to do this.
