hey why not try Knoppix 3.4 or 3.6 ? come as live CD so that cafe owner can see how it looks before he installs. knoppix-install (i think, earlier used to be knx-hdinstall) will install Knoppix to his HDD. it has KDE and is based on gnome. if apt-get is properly configured then he can also update regularly.
