for what it is worth - this setting only seemed to work for a few
messages and now
its back to old behaviour of opening just the message.

Yes, there's clearly some things which could work better here -- or

least be more configurable (this is not the only place where a
message
should, at least optionally, be opened in context).
For now, I've added this preference for you:
defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmOpenMessageURLInContext -bool
YES
It should work in the next update.
