OK, no bug. Ben noticed that there was a sliver of the msg pane visible,
so MM was convinced that I’ve actually seen the next msg. Hiding the
msg pane again fixed the issue.

I double-click a message. It opens in the new window (I use 2 panes
only). I delete it. It disappears as expected. After a couple seconds,
the status of the next message that was unread is changed to read.
