There is a bug after all, just somewhere else. I just created ticket
#1903 documenting MM opening a few millimeters of the 3rd pane on its
own, uninvited that is, when switching list views, causing the problem
with messages being marked as read.

I double-click a message. It opens in the new window (I use 2 panes
only). I delete it. It disappears as expected. After a couple
seconds, the status of the next message that was unread is changed to
read.
