We frown upon it, and our server would have put that in, if you got it from my 
email.
It's complex, and the science of detecting a forgery is ... Complex.

Sadly.

Main point is, try not to look like a spammer, and it's worse to try and look 
like another legit sender if you're not them.

PS, what kind of an email client do you use? Didn't it set the message ID? Or 
did your server replace it?
