Some of it may be in response to the growing trend of many websites to pop up an annoying overlay asking for an email address either before reading the content or after a few-second delay. Site visitors get annoyed and put random or not-so-random addresses there just to stop the annoyance. We've had customers who have tried these overlays and given up because of the high percentage of bogus addresses.
Of course, a lot of these sites don't bother to COI such submissions, preferring quantity over quality.
