IIRC the email sender address was dropped before *verified known senders*
were invented, presumably on the grounds that these MTAs were short of screen space. Both the sender address and the sender name can trivially be spoofed so are unreliable; the obvious thing to do was to display the friendly name designed for humans and not the address designed for computers.

Once this had happened, people wanted to see the sender address, so
the verified known sender concept was invented, and hence DKIM and possibly SPF ...
