Because of marketing.

Marketing people should be blamed for 80-90% of the problems we're
discussing here.

And they aren't even good marketers.

Subdomains instead of a proliferation of registry-level domains help maintain coherent branding and help customers know where to go. For example, if I want to buy something from Apple I go to store.apple.com. Guess where support is? That's right. Microsoft gets this too. Proliferation of domains promotes an image of an organization fighting with itself, with groups trying to maintain distance from the organization as a whole.
