Not anymore... Command-L has been crippled by the recent update in Gmail (i.e. the latest version now has the buttons near the top squared-off, and more-properly formatted).
Am in agreement that both the new "L" keyboard shortcut and Mailplane's Command-L feature are virtually identical in their basic functions.
