This has been happening to me for a while now, but it just occurred to me to check to see if I had the same problem in Safari. Turns out I don't.
When I start Mailplane, it usually has the Offline status icon saying I'm unable to sync with GMail and to sign in if I want to sync. I click the sign-in link—nothing happens. Generally if I restart Mailplane enough times, it'll eventually work. Sometimes it works if I switch to another account and back.
