I believe that I'm seeing the same problem.  Here's how I do it:

1) click on inbox, then click on search box to give it focus
2) type "peter johns" and then <ret> to execute the search
3) I really meant to search for "peter jones" so I click on the right
side search box to give it focus and position the cursor at the right
side of the text
4) now I type delete to get rid of the "s" and the search happens
automatically on "peter john" and the search box loses focus
5) now if I type delete again, I do not see deletion of the "n", I get
the previous search instead so I'm back to "peter johns" again.

The behavior of the web interface (safari) does not do this so the
automatic search and loss of focus does not occur at step 4.  I think
this is closer to the correct behavior.
