I have done all of the above and the problem not only persists, it's
gotten progressively worse.

1) All of my https settings are in agreement.

2) I have eliminated gears completely.

3) I don't use Safari for browsing. I use Chrome.

I don't just get the hang changing accounts, I am also now plagued
with spontaneous timeout complaints, often when I am trying to read a
message, which of course returns me to the Inbox. Also sometimes when
Mailplane is running in the background.

Restting the account doesn't help, unless the timeouts going away for
an hour or so is helping.
