I tried to reproduce the problem with Chrome 8.0.552.231 (Chrome > About
Chrome).
Plain text and Rich text were tested and composing a message in a separate
window, too. It always worked as expected.

Things to try:
- Update Chrome if you have an older version
- Mailplane > Check for update  (to get the latest version).
- Mailplane > Reset Gmail Session
