The memory usage you are seeing is normal. 80% of the memory is used by Gmail web interface. Gmail uses about the same amount in Safari and Mailplane. This is something only Google can optimize. Tip: Another way to conserve RAM: - Open Preferences > Advanced - Enable "Close instead of hide main window" - Close Main window (Cmd-W). Hope this helps.
