FYI, not sure if that's the case here, but if the MBP is going to sleep the memory usage doesn't grow during this period (at least that's the case with mine). So if he's hasn't used his MBP in 18hrs and it's set to sleep in 30min then this could be the difference. Not sure if that's the case here but wanted to offer up that scenario.
