I have exactly the same problem. I have tried everything. Removed Google Gears, deleted *.cookies file, tried System Webkit, disabled the Flash plugin. I have reset the Gmail session.
I'm on 10.7.1 with Mailplane 2.5 (with Rapportive and Boomerang). There's a message saying that my chat connection may have been interrupted. And to add insult to injury, I cannot attach files to my emails when using Mailplane's own webkit and the Flash plugin. The same is true, by the way, on both my iMac and my MacBook. Gmail is fine if I log in through Safari. Before I upgraded to Lion Mailplane worked fine. I am deeply disappointed.
