Same issue AND I can't attach files to outgoing emails. The same happens on both my iMac and my MacBook.
I've tried all the remedies that have been suggested (reset Gmail session, removed Google Gears, deleted .cookies file, switched to system webkit, deactivated the Flash plugin).
