There are issues with Growl, it is now a paid app, *developers have to make
changes* to their code to make it fully work but they also *don't have to
make any changes to make it fully work*. I really don't understand, but it
seems a mess to me.

There are *two podcasts about what happened*. One pro, from the developers,
one con, from a user.

Here is
one<http://basementcoders.com/2011/10/episode-47-fork-you-growl-interview-with-perry-metzger/>,
make sure you listen to the other from the developer before forming an
opinion. I however, can't find it in a fully confirmed way. My personal
opinion is it was a weak move to make a money play.

Fine, I am ok with that, *( devs need t make a living and Growl has ben
free for something like 8 years ) *but just say so, and never blame your
developers for your mistakes. And never ask your users to go into the .app
and *show package contents* to make changes to an internal file/resource.
It's why apple hides .app and makes it hard to get into a .pkg and while
~/Library *( as of Lion )* is now hidden – and soon, it will require a ton
more work to enter into an application if people keep this up.

A kind developer forked Growl making all these issues a non issue. From
what I understand, if you buy the version on the app store, at a very
reasonable price by the way, and don't fully uninstall the old version, as
the uninstaller doesn't work perfectly, you yield yourself a broken system.

It was one apx one line to fix this, so someone on the mailing list did.
He was kicked off the mailing list for doing so, *or that is my
interpretation of it*, but please, read and listen for yourself. The
mailing list guy will more than likely fully fork Growl and start a new
Growl making us all happy again.

I can't find a user who is happy about this *( Based on comments on blogs )*,
and it surely is not about the measly few bucks – there is more to it than
this.

the issue:

If you listen to the forked interview, you will see he is a really fair and
nice guy. I hope it can all be worked out, Growl does so much. And app
foes not have time to add in sounds, well, Growl can do that for you. An
app does not have time to add in alerts, well, Growl can do that for you.
It is such a great tool that I would hate to see encumbered by bureaucracy.

I hope I have explained this in as unbiased a way as possible. But please,
do listen to the podcasts and do your research before forming an opinion.
