Hi, I can tell my experience here: On Lion, I closely followed the uninstall instructions on the growl web page (http://growl.info/growlupdateavailable, section 'For those on OSX 10.7 Lion). Then I installed Growl 1.3.1 from the App Store, and everything works as expected. Other applications (such as Evernote) also show notifications (beside Mailplane).
