I also have exactly the same problem. It started abou two weeks ago, and it looks like it is getting worse. I used Mailplane on the MacPro desktop and on MacBook Pro laptop. The desktop has Lion and laptop has Snow Leopard, the problem seems to occur on both machines. With the laptop it occurs everywhere at home and at work. I have 4 Gmail accounts in 3 different domains and I see the problem in all accounts. It feels like some accounts are affected more then others. Sometimes the problem occurs on all accounts at once, sometimes it occurs only on one of the accounts. Also, when problem starts to occur it keeps occurring on the for next few hours.
One more thing, the problem is not related to the type of network I am on. The desktop is on the hard wired network, that goes straight into internet via a router, the laptop travels between all kinds of networks ( wired, open wireless, wireless behind multiple firewalls ) I see the problem everywhere, so I don't think it is anything on the network that causes it. My opinion is that google might be playing with the servers and implementing some type of intrusion prevention scheme. I am not familiar by internal workings of mailplane, but could it be related to running multiple instances of web-browser that causes the problems. And like the other two ladies, I never see this problem occurring in actual browser. Given the problem with Mailplane I keep multiple copies of Gmail open in multiple browser windows and everything works perfectly. However it is not as convenient as using Mailplane.
