Hi Doug - I've noticed the same thing. Support recommendation was to try running Safari with the same tabs to see if I saw similar issues. On a quick test I did not (i.e. Safari used around 200 meg, while Mailplane used close to a gig or more) but I need to actually try this over a couple of days to see what happens.
