1. Proposal from SSU to host the 2009 MAISA Annual Meeting on January 31.
Format? Who to organize?
2. Need for a web person who can keep the MAISA website updated.
3. Columbia request to be excused from No Show at Faye Bennet due to illness
of a
competitor who was previously scheduled.
4. Georgetown request to be excused from No Shows (Danmark, Tom Curtis) on
10/4-5
due to restrictions by college personnel
5. SCHEDULING: (Winters)
A) Change in the determination of the Grant Regatta Host:
The Grant host shall be the highest ranked team that didn't make the America
and who can host 8 or more teams.
If there are more teams who want in than that host can handle, berths to be
awarded, starting with the host and its region and taking the next highest
placed team in the spring qualifiers in the order of
north/central/south/north/central/south..etc one year and then
south/central/north//south/central/north/
..etc the next until the regatta is filled. The next highest teams left out
will
be alternates. Any team left out will get just one place worse than the last
place team at the Grant for scheduling purposes.
If interest in the event picks up, we should stipulate the host have the
capacity to host 10 or more teams.
B) Proposals for dealing with the schedule conflicts involving GTN and
KP for 2009.
The Regatta Site Rotations call for GTN to host the Prosser (S10-3) on the
same weekend as the Arrigan (S10-4) and KP is called upon to host the MAISA
Regatta (F08-5 on the same weekend as the KP Dingy Open (F08-6). Since moving
events to deal with this problem may create more problems than would be solved,
I
offer these two proposals.
Proposal #A
We leapfrog to the next host in the rotation.
The Prosser would go to NYM.
The MAISA Regatta would go to GTN.
Proposal #B
We swap the rotational responsibilities:
KP takes the Prosser and GTN takes the MAISA Regatta.
The rotations continue as now scheduled in the following year.
C) For Discussion
Hypothetical Proposal:
Rotate the America host site between the four northern hosts, KP, HWS, COR,
NYM.
Rotate the War Memorial between the four southern hosts, ODU, SMC, NA, GTN.
Purpose: To place these events at the best time of the year for avoiding
bad/cold weather.
To reduce the demands on the smaller teams for wet suits and dry suits.
Considerations:
With 8 teams able to host these events, we have an eight year cycle which,
unless we adjust the current rotation, means that a sailor could sail every one
of eight seasons and still not visit all of our biggest sailing sites during
one of the major events.
The argument against this is the "home field advantage" the northern schools
might have to get into the Nationals. Historically, the host didn't qualify
for the Nationals 4 times in the last eleven years. During this period, only
twice did the host win the America. The host qualified for the nationals seven
times.
Not counting last year's expanded field, only seven teams have ever qualified
during the last eleven years and only one other team made the expanded field
last year. So, how big and advantage is it being the host?
Making this change would go far to reduce the need for dry suits for the
small teams. In any case, we should restructure our rotations in such a way
that a
sailor, using all eight seasons would have the opportunity to sail at all
major MAISA sites.
