Leroy Grant Regatta 4-16, 4-17 2011

Toms River Yacht Club and Kean-Ocean hosted the two day M.A.I.S.A. Leroy Grant
Regatta with 10 teams from the Middle Atlantic Region attending. The Teams
competing were Kean-Ocean, Monmouth, Drexel, Villanova, Syracuse, Army, U. of
Maryland, RIT, Webb, OCC and Christopher Newport University.

14 races races were sailed during Saturdays event with the sailing being
cut short near the end of the day due to extreme winds. On the second day of
racing, even stronger winds of 25-30 kts led the to the canceling of the
event. With one day of scores counting, the brand new Kean-Ocean sailing
team were in first place and Monmouth close behind. Teams were challenged just
to stay upright in many cases with the extreme conditions of big swells and
puffy breeze that ranged from 12- 25 mph on the first day.

Kean Ocean hosted teams for dinner and a gutter regatta which will become our
signature event. Each team was given a block of foam, a dowel, mylar, packing
tape and a half hour to design a boat. Teams were then pitted head to head on
10
foot gutters filled with water and teams had to blow their boats down the
track.
Army won by designing a two and a half foot long boat that put them two and a
half feet closer to the finish line. We will tighten the rules next year.

The top five teams were:

Kean-Ocean 52
Monmouth 54
U. Maryland 66
Christopher Npt.72
Webb Inst. 75

The Kean-Ocean Sailing Team would like the to thank Toms River Yacht for the
use
of their facilities and OCC sailing team for use of their boats.
