In the castle of Fontainebleau hangs a painting by Rubens showing Aeneas
putting down his father after the flight from Troy. The painting was made at
Mantua and Aeneas might be interpreted as the ruler of Mantua, taking
control of the people (Mantuans//Trojans). The painting is usually dated
1602-1603.

A theater-curtain from 1602 from Mantua cites the 10th book of Vergils
Eneide. Has anyone informations about Vergil- and especially
Aeneid-Reception in the years of the engagement of Vincenzo Gonzaga, the
Duke of Mantua, in the campagne on the Balcan against Muslim attacks
between 1593-1606?
