Hi, styling of vector layer is currently very basic in MapBuilder. Release 1.5 will not have more style support than what you already found out.
So for complex styling, especially when labels are needed, it is still better to have a WMS create images. You can add a data source with lat and lon columns as spatial data source to Mapserver, and also Geoserver IIRC. Regards, Andreas.
