This advice will probably be a step backwards, but thought it worth mentioning that we built a GML Viewer (views a directory full of GML files) which included basic color selection styling. You can download and view the GML Viewer as a separate release.
Note that there has been significant work on the vector rendering since the GML Viewer (released last year) and I'm not sure if the SLD color rendering was carried through to the current release.
